A Chinese man has had his conviction for rape and murder overturned, 21 years after he was executed.

Nie Shubin was killed by firing squad in 1995 at the age of 20 after being found guilty of killing a woman in Shijiazhuang, in Hebei province.

The supreme court ruled the facts found in Mr Nie’s trial were “uncertain as well as the evidence inadequate”.

The family, that have been campaigning to clear his name of Mr Nie, thanked his assistants.

The claim was rejected although eleven years back another guy also said he’d carried out the offense.

The official variety of executions certainly are a state secret, but is considered to maintain the thousands annually.

Rights groups allege that confessions extracted or found in court are induced under torture.

It’s exceedingly uncommon for convictions to be overturned. A teen from Inner Mongolia was cleared of homicide and rape, 18 years.

The BBC’s John Sudworth in Beijing says the instance of Mr Nie is well known in China.

Rather than the usual hint of the skill of the justice system to right wrongs, his exoneration will be seen by many as exposing weaknesses and continuing defects in the justice system, he includes.
