The Supreme Court is starting a watershed legal hearing into whether the approval of Parliament is needed before official Brexit discussions can start.
Its 11 justices will hear a government appeal against the High Court ruling of last month that Parliament has the power to activate Article 50.
The hearing, being streamed by the BBC, is anticipated to last four days, using the verdict anticipated in January.
The results could have consequences for the strategy for EU departure of Theresa May. Opening the case, Supreme Court president Lord Neuberger said the justices were conscious of the public interest in the case as well as the “powerful feelings linked to the many broader political questions enclosing the Uk ‘s departure in the European Union”.
However he added: “This appeal is concerned with legal dilemmas, and, as judges, our responsibility would be to consider those problems impartially, also to determine the case in accordance with regulations.”
