After a popular rebel leader was shot dead five people including a teenaged girl were killed in overnight battles between protesters and government forces, authorities said taking the cost to 23.

Hundreds more have been wounded in the protests that broke out despite a curfew imposed across much of the Kashmir Valley.

HM is among several groups that have for decades been fighting with around half a million Indian troops deployed in the area, calling for freedom.

Approximately 300 people happen to be injured, including almost 100 authorities, and hospitals say they have been overwhelmed. Most casualties teargas inhalation or suffered gunshot wounds.

There were also reports of wounded protesters being targeted — one local physicians’ organization said that tear gas canisters was fired in the hospital emergency room.
