Awful Florence’s Arno river embankment collapses
A section of the embankment of the River Arno in Florence that was central fell on Wednesday morning, sending part of at least 20 parked autos into a ditch that was newly formed and the road.
The failure took place quite close to the famed Ponte Vecchio, a medieval covered bridge over the Arno.
The hole is about 200m (650ft) in length and 7m (23ft) across.
Firemen believe the chasm has been created by the failure of a large water pipe beneath the surface.
