Cairo University Prohibits Teachers From Wearing Face Veil

The head of Egypt’s Cairo University says his recent decision to prohibit female staff from wearing the entire face veil intends to put a stop to student grievances of “poor communication” in course.

Even though the head to toe covering understood locally as the niqab is “not a happening” among his teachers, Gaber Nassar told The Associated Press Friday that he needs to “treat the disorder” before it becomes one.

Nassar said he gets the support of the Grand Mufti, the top religious authority in Egypt, although pupils and Islamic clerics have denounced the move as discriminatory.

Nassar says the face veil is particularly difficult in language classes, where the fabric obstacle of the veil hinders student teacher communications — creating grads and low levels incapable of enunciation.
