Fires have razed parts of the “Jungle” migrant camp in Calais, as French authorities continue operations to demolish it.

At least one gas canister burst with one migrant.

The clearance began on Monday and about 4,000 migrants – out of taken from the squalid camp . to shelters around France

There are concerns remain that some will refuse to quit their efforts to cross the Channel to great britain.

The operation has been largely peaceful up to now.

He says this may happen to be a last act of defiance from migrants who didn’t need to leave and did not desire to see their shelters taken down by the authorities.

The prefect of Pas de Calais, Fabienne Buccio, told BFMTV is was “a custom among the migrant population to ruin their houses before leaving”.

Migrants queued on Wednesday to watch for buses to take them out of the camp, with the scenario calmer in relation to the jostling of the previous morning.

Teams started dismantling the “Jungle” with sledgehammers on Wednesday. Workers in hard hats and orange jumpsuits pulled down shacks and unoccupied tents.

The work has been carried out mainly by hand, and in a low-key style, as officials believe the wrong message would be sent by sending in bulldozers as of this point to migrants.

The operation is planned to be finished by Friday, and is anticipated to continue on Wednesday. The Calais police commissioner says just about 200 people are expected to maintain the camp then.

About 3,000 migrants have been moved out on coaches to centres 1,000 unaccompanied minors have been given lodging in containers near the Jungle.
