The Police Chief Jon Belmar said on Thursday that two police officers shot in Ferguson overnight during protests against the police department and they could have died from their injuries. There are an officer shot in the face and still has a bullet in his head.

There were a small crowd of protesters began to break up when the shots were fired after holding a demonstration in the wake of the resignation of the stepped down Ferguson police chief on Wednesday.

The weapon that used in the shot was a handgun as the investigators with the department said. There was cooperation from several people who were on the scene with police.

They didn’t give any details about potential suspects in the shooting and the top priority of the department is finding the suspects.

Witnesses said shots apparently came from across the street from the Ferguson Police Department while Belmar believes those involved could have been associated with the protests and the responsibility for last night’s shooting lies with whoever did that shooting.

Thursday morning was the first time an officer at a protest had been shot while there were similar and much larger demonstrations after shooting death of black 18-year-old Michael Brown last summer by city police officer Darren Wilson.
