The last episode of Downton Abbey was watched by an average of 8.4 million spectators, overnight figures show.
There’ll be a Christmas special which buffs hope will tie up some loose ends prior to the play formally ends although billed as the final episode.
The show, which began in 2010, has been a success around the world.
Although ratings had fallen over the span of the sixth series, the episode of Sunday night was the greatest viewed since November 2013.
Critics normally commended the ending, with The Guardian’s Sam Wollaston saying “farewell to a pretty glorious posh soap opera”.
Television will undoubtedly be a dowdier place without it,” he said.
The Telegraph’s Allison Pearson included: “Thankfully, the finale, which came in the end of a dull show, was an absolute corker. That trademark recipe of low comedy and high melodrama was served up on a silver salver.”
