A strong 6.3-magnitude quake struck eastern Indonesia now, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Mochammad Riyadi, a senior official from the meteorology, climatology and geophysics bureau in Indonesia, said the quake was felt on Halmahera, which will be a part of the Maluku Island chain. He added there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami alert was issued. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
