SYRIA’s WAR! Leaders to gather in London for Syria donor conference

World leaders will assemble to get a donor conference in London on Thursday in an endeavor to raise GBP6.2bn ($9bn; EUR8.3bn) for those impacted by the war in Syria.

Some 70 leaders are expected to attend the seminar, the fourth of its type, including UK PM David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.they’re planning to raise resources for schooling and occupations for Syrian refugees.

Hours prior to the convention was expected to start, peace discussions between opposition and the Syrian regime broke down.

The United Nations-brokered talks, which started only two days past, are likely to restart on 25 February.

Staffan de Mistura, the UN’s special envoy in the talks, declared there had been a dearth of improvement but said the discussions hadn’t failed.

The GBP6.2bn being sought on Thursday is made up of a UN coordinated appeal by tons of aid agencies for around GBP5.3bn and about GBP900m requested by regional host authorities. David Cameron will pledge an added GBP1.2bn from the UK.

The leaders of China and Taiwan are holding talks for the first time since the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949.

The President Ma Ying-jeou in Taiwan and discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping started at 15:00 local time (07:00 GMT).

China views Taiwan as a breakaway province which will one day be reunited with all the mainland, by force if necessary.

Both leaders entered the meeting room collectively and waved, grinning, to the scrum of photographers.

There were demonstrations from the discussions and one group tried to enter the parliament building in Taiwan.

Some Taiwanese feel China is developing a lot of sway in Taiwan.

Relations have improved under Mr Ma since he took office in 2008, with better economic ties, enhancing tourism connections, along with a trade pact signed.

The two sides split in 1949 when the Kuomintang establish a fresh government in Taiwan and lost in the civil war to the Chinese Communist Party.
