A South African woman has been found guilty of kidnapping a two-day-old baby in 1997.Cops accused her of fraudulently claiming to function as the daughter’s biological mother since snatching her from a hospital in Cape Town.
The 50-year-old woman was arrested last year after suspicions were raised when there is a similar-appearing girl at the kid ‘s school.DNA evaluations afterward established that the two girls were sisters, authorities said. Morne and Celeste Nurse, the kidnapped girl’s parents, called her Zephany, but the name she grew up with has not been disclosed to protect her identity.
The condemned woman has also not been named for similar motives. Zephany were living together with the accused, near the Nurse family’s house in the Cape Flats, a largely working class neighbourhood in Cape Town, when she was found last year.A national hunt in 1997 failed to locate her. In her evidence, the accused girl said she believed she had legally adopted the child after her own pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.
She said she was handed a new-born baby at a busy railway station by a girl called Sylvia, who can’t be located. They have been lost, although she also said that she’d signed adoption papers. Giving his verdict, Judge John Hlophe described the defendant’s account as a fairytale, South African media report. Zephany has now been put in the care of social workers.
