A mom was jailed for a minimum of 24 years for murdering her 21-month-old daughter, who perished with harms likened to those of a car crash victim. 23, Kathryn Smith, stamped Ayeeshia Jane Smith in May 2014, to death in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire.

Her then partner, Matthew Rigby, 22, was jailed for eight months and 3 years after being found guilty of causing or allowing the departure of Ayeeshia. The pair were sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court following a six-week trial. Ayeeshia expired to her heart from a tear, but had suffered many other harms in the months before she was killed.

As the long list was read out, Smith and Rigby shouted in the dock. It included a bleed on the brain.

“For no obvious reason her life was snuffed out with a savage beating in her bedroom encompassed by her playthings,” she said. The outburst of savage violence had not been an isolated occurrence and Smith had an “explosive temper”, she said.

Mrs Justice Andrews called Ayeeshia’s mom a “devious, manipulative and selfish young woman”.Ayeeshia was known to social services at Derbyshire County Council all her life, after her pregnant mother was found living in a garage in Overseal before being moved into supported housing in nearby Swadlincote.
