At least 20 individuals, including an eight-year old boy and a toddler, have died in floods in West Virginia, in accordance with state officials.
Floods and significant thunderstorms have caused extensive damage through the state, said Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.
A state of emergency was declared in 44 of the 55 counties of the state.
While officials continued to seek out others stranded in devastated regions rescue attempts were under way for about 500 people trapped in a shopping centre.
After a storm system dropped nine inches of rain on areas of the state the flood has destroyed over 100 houses and knocked out power for thousands.
