A powerful quake in a remote place of the extreme west in China has killed a minumum of one villager following a house failed, authorities said.
The seismological bureau of the Xinjiang region in China said that 55 houses were damaged and 32 fell within an area bordering Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in the quake that hit late Friday.
The government shut some railways and has dispatched emergency response workers.
That part of the Xinjiang highland is mostly rural, although shallow earthquakes tend to be prone to cause damage in populated urban areas.
China’s earthquake monitoring agency said the quake epicenter was situated in Kizilsu Khirgiz Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, which will be near the regional heart of Kashgar in Akto county.
