NEW DELHI: The 66-year old when he fell only after climbing the stairway up in the white marble grave was accompanied by three others along with an area guide, said the policeman responsible for the tourist police station.

“He was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital however he couldn’t be restored,” Sushant Gaur told AFP.

“A post mortem was carried out as well as the cause of death is heart attack. We’ve duly notified the Japanese embassy in regards to the unfortunate event.”

His name was given by authorities as Hideto Ueda.

The BBC as saying the tourist quoted an eyewitness, Sagar Singh said that the tourist fell while shooting a selfie at the Royal Gate of the Taj Mahal.

The Taj — India’s top tourist attraction — was constructed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth. It brings about 12,000 visitors a day.
