The near-simultaneous assaults in Paris that killed almost 130 people were an “act of war” organised by the Islamic State (IS) militant group, says France’s President Francois Hollande.

He explained the attacks, carried out by eight gunmen and suicide bombers, were “organised and intended from exterior”.

The targets comprised restaurants, pubs, a concert and a high-profile football match. IS claimed the attacks.

Mr Hollande has raised the security threat level to its highest point and imposed a nationwide state of emergency. 180 people wounded at least, 80 of whom are in a critical state.

These are the deadliest attacks in peacetime France, and just the fourth time since WWII a state of emergency was imposed. The past time was during a 2005 tide of riots.

It is the worst atrocity in Europe.

The night of violence unfolded soon after 21:00 (20:00 GMT) as folks were enjoying a Friday night out in the French capital.

A gunman opened fire on Le Carillon pub in the rue Alibert, not far before heading across the road (Little Cambodia).

A Saudi prince and four others were detained on Monday in Lebanon in the largest drug bust in the annals of the Beirut airport, a security source said.

“The smuggling operation is the largest one that is foiled through the Beirut International Airport,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

Captagon is the brand name for the amphetamine phenethylline, an artificial stimulant. The prohibited drug is consumed mostly in the Middle East and has allegedly been trusted by combatants in Syria. The security source said the drugs have been packed into cases which were waiting to be loaded on a personal plane which was headed to Saudi Arabia. The five Saudi citizens were in the airport and could be challenged by Lebanon’s customs authority, the source added.

In April 2014, security forces foiled an attempt to smuggle 15 million capsules of Captagon concealed in shipping containers filled with corn from Beirut’s port.

Lebanon’s state news agency was carrying 40 bags full of Captagon and also reported Monday’s drug bust, saying the private plane.

Girls are blowing off death threats from extremists to get the opportunity to eventually become the primary globally-recognised Miss Iraq for decades.

The controversy has not been enough to discourage contestants such as Shaima Qassem Abdulrahman, a 20-year old economics student from Kirkuk.

“Our people are badly in need of such cultural activities,” the freshman told NBC News. “After all we have been through, we need to do something new that would reform our society.”

Like many Iraqis, the violence brought to her state by ISIS has directly impacted Abdulrahman. Two were members of the national police in Iraq until they were killed while fighting with the militants.

Five were also compelled to locate houses that were new a year ago after ISIS overran the northern city of Mosul.

Describing her choice to join the competition, Abdulrahman said that “such actions can rebuild what’s been destroyed.”

Iraq has an extensive history of beauty pageants that are holding.
