US President-elect Donald Trump has called for national unity in a address to mark the Thanksgiving holiday.
The time had come, he explained, “to start to heal our divisions” but added that “tensions simply do not recover overnight”.
Before he declared the appointment of two women to his cabinet, both of whom had been critical of him.
On Wednesday, Mr Trump declared while Betsy DeVos continues to be selected to be secretary of education, that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was his pick for US ambassador to the United Nations.
The appointments will have to be accepted by the Republican-controlled Senate.
“She’ll be an excellent leader representing us on the planet stage,” he added.
Mrs Haley said she was “transferred” to take the duty and also would stay on as South Carolina governor, pending her congressional confirmation.
Through the Republican primaries, she supported then and Florida Senator Marco Rubio Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
Mrs Haley also firmly assaulted Mr Trump’s suggestion to prohibit Muslim immigrants, describing it as “unAmerican”.
