OMG! India outrage at minister’s $7.3m house with bullet-proof bathroom

The chief minister of the south Indian state of Telangana has caused outrage after moving into a palatial new home that cost taxpayers $7.3m (£5.8m).

The building is spread over 9,000 square metres (100,000 sq ft) of prime real estate in Hyderabad city.

It has bulletproof bathrooms, an auditorium which seats 250 people along with a meeting hall that holds 500 rooms.

The minister’s unique guru blessed the house while the bulletproof bathroom continues to be roundly mocked.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao went into the house on Thursday after a series of religious rituals led by his spiritual guru, Chinna Jeeyar Swamy.

Mr Swamy also sat in Mr Rao’s official chair to “bless” it.

Mr Rao is a great believer in vaastu, which can be an ancient Hindu custom used in construction.
He has also experienced the news for trying to demolish the state’s secretariat complex because he considers its vaastu is not good for the state.
Senior political commentator and writer, Kingsuk Nag, told BBC Hindi’s Imran Qureshi the house exhibited Mr Rao’s “feudal” mindset.
“It’s like the good old days when the feudal lord might possess a castle that will possess a house together with his office. And, afterward the issues would say, oh, exactly what an enormous palace,” he said.
Using security issues as justification for the scale of the residence, made no sense, he added.
Mr Rao’s move came only weeks after the extravagant wedding of the daughter of another Indian politician additionally fuelled rage among Indians that were cash strapped.
