A woman’s severed head is found lying next to a man’s body in the base of an Austrian lake, in what authorities said appeared to be a case of suicide and murder.
Police and residents found the remains in central Austria nearby the coast of the Traunsee.
The control of the man (72), whose body showed no signs of battle, were tied to totes containing rocks in addition to personal property.
“This makes us chiefly think of an ‘lengthy suicide’,” a prosecutor for the nearby town of Wels, Birgit Ahamer, told a news conference, adding that initial forensic evaluations suggested the woman was strangled and the man had drowned.
After a concrete block found in a bag on the lakebed was broken open by forensic specialists in the city of Salzburg, the head of the woman, who was 71 years old, was uncovered.
Police said they could not identify the bodies.
